i wished to live a life of travel
down mountains high up deserts level
darkly easy hoping for summer
cicadas incessant like a chronic hummer
maybe like me

so in all my dreams of falling i'm in a locked car
off the edge like a disaster at a rally
swinging round the steering wheel but not getting far
as i plunge into the wallkill valley

found myself attached, detached
to the possum at the intersection
cause playing dead
is an involuntary reaction
and there the game
can at any time turn real
at once under the bleak black heel
of a cruel tight dark rubber wheel

so in all my dreams of falling i'm in a locked car

and the strangest cold magic reality
is that no one really knows a thing about me
a subtle catch in my brain that snags every friend so
at 4 am i check my window for ufos
